Ikea on Thursday introduced plans to buy a wind farm with 55
generators in the oil-rich Canadian province
of Alberta to offset its local
stores' strength use and decrease their carbon footprint.
The Wintering Hills 88 megawatt wind farm, approximately 130
kilometers (miles) east of Calgary,
can produce enough electricity for 54 big-container shops or 26,000 households.
Ikea has a dozen shops in Canada,
with plans for extra.
The investment in renewable electricity "actions us in
the direction of our international ambition to produce extra renewable energy
than we eat by means of 2020," Ikea Canada
sustainability supervisor Brendan Seale stated in a announcement.
The business enterprise has allocated $three.2 billion for
renewable electricity globally, and has spent 1/2 of the quantity since 2009.
it is shopping for the 5-yr-old wind farm inside the heart
of Canada's foremost oil producing location from the electricity firm TransAlta
and mining behemoth Teck assets for nearly Can$a hundred and twenty million
($ninety two million).
it will likely be the second Ikea investment in renewable
electricity in Alberta, following
the purchase of a 46 megawatt wind farm in Pincher Creek in 2013.
The pair of farms will produce extra than four times the
strength the enterprise consumes in Canada.
The deal is expected to close inside 3 weeks.
