Austrian motel ditching key cards after hackers strike

An Austrian luxurious resort says it's ditching digital room cards for old skool locks and keys after having their structures frozen via blackmail-hungry hackers.

The husband-and-wife management of Romantik Seehotel Jaegerwirt, inside the Austrian Alps, says that one recent contamination with ransom software program resulted in the whole shutdown of lodge computers.

they say they had been pressured to pay roughly 1,500 euros (almost $1,600) worth of electronic foreign money to repair their community.

several courses incorrectly pronounced that the ransomware infection led to visitors being locked into or out of their rooms.

In a chain of emails, the hotel stated Tuesday that the contamination only resulted in new visitors being briefly unable to get keys to their rooms.

motel co-manager Christina Brandstaetter says the brand new arrivals have been handled to champagne whilst they waited.
